Driver Trainer

Job Summary:
Responsible to screen and train truck drivers within the organization; and as time permits operate straight truck or tractor-trailer equipment.

• Prepare and deliver instructional activities that facilitate a positive and active learning experience for drivers in the classroom and in the field.
• Road test potential drivers during interview process.
• Identify candidates’ abilities and recommend if training time should be invested to meet Knife River standards.
• Consistently follow up with drivers after training, answer any questions and give guidance.
• Work with individuals aspiring to obtain their Class A or B license to develop their abilities to pass the driving test. Schedule and bring them to the DMV or test site for behind the wheel test.
• Establish and maintain working relationships with local DMV or test site agencies.
• Be knowledgeable of and share DOT regulations with drivers.
• Safely operate Class A or B truck to transport asphalt, aggregate or ready-mix concrete to job site often driving on uneven or unfinished surface.
• Inspects truck for defects before and after trips and submits report indicating truck condition. Maintains driver log according to ICC regulations as required.
• May operate loader to load aggregate into truck box.
• Daily maintenance of equipment such as cleaning truck inside and out, greasing, oiling, brakes, lights and any other maintenance instructed to perform.
• Recognize surroundings and practice traffic awareness to maintain a safe environment.
• Tarp load when needed, spread product, verify gates are closed, assist crews as needed.
• Clean spilled material/buildup off box (spill chutes, belts, side boards, etc.)
• Complete load tickets.
• Must be proficient with Microsoft Office, Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
• Maintain proper information in truck.
• Report information accurately and completely on daily time cards, truck cab information and other needed paperwork.
• Maintain and support a safe and harassment free work environment.
• Ensure OSHA, DOT, EPA, DNR, MSHA, Federal, State, and Local safety and environmental regulation compliance and attend required training.
• Ability to communicate effectively (verbal, listening, written).
• Ability to read maps and navigate to new locations.
• Must be self-motivated, team-player with excellent interpersonal skills; ability to maintain positive customer relations and act courteous and respectful toward others.
• Ability to work with minimal supervision, recognize matters needing attention and initiate action.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
• General education, grammar and arithmetic, GED or high school diploma or equivalent.
• A CDL Class A (tractor-trailer). Experience driving a belly dump, flow boy, lowboy, tanker, ready mix or straight truck.
• Must have and maintain medical card and acceptable driving record and required endorsements.
