Job Summary:
The Quality Control Manager is responsible for assuring the quality of materials produced/sold from Knife River Ready Mix Concrete, aggregate, and Pug Mill operations. The Quality Control Manager plans, directs, and co-ordinates quality control/quality assurance programs designed to ensure continuous production of products meeting the requirements of the owner, contractor and appropriate engineering standards. Proficient in designing Ready Mix Concrete and Pug Mill mixtures. Assess all raw materials to determine the suitability/acceptability of these materials for the production of high quality products. A high degree of problem solving ability and the initiative to take corrective action when a problem surfaces is required. Supervise and direct the daily functions of the quality control field and lab staff. Observes all safety, housekeeping and environmental rules and regulations.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and a minimum of eight (8) years of quality control experience in the concrete, and aggregates industry. Minimum of two (2) years supervisory experience required. ACI Field Grade I Certification - Required. NRMCA Field Grade II Certification & NRMCA Concrete Technologist Level 2&3 Certifications - Preferred.

Supervision: Proven ability to effectively lead and direct staff.

Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex documents such as scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Must be able to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.

Mathematical Skills: Strong mathematical skills are required and will be used daily to address multiple items from probability and statistics to more basic problems using fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

Reasoning Aptitude: Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Other Required Skills: Proficient in Microsoft Office software; strong organizational and time management skills; must be able to maintain confidential information. Understanding and working knowledge of plant batching systems.

Scope and Responsibility: Responsible for quality control in a business unit capable of producing one hundred million or greater in revenue.
Essential Duties/Responsibilites
Develops and examines statistical data and product specifications to determine appropriate standards and establish proposed quality and reliability expectancy for finished products. Formulates and maintains quality control objectives.

Monitors and determine raw material acceptability by conducting frequent material inspections and by sampling and performing physical tests.

Determines disposition of finished products by collecting, classifying, analyzing, and interpreting production and quality data, judging product acceptability in comparison to project specifications.

Interacts with owners, customers, vendors, sales and delivery personnel as required to investigate and resolve quality issues.

Troubleshoot and solve situations resulting from material and/or mechanical problems.

Interfaces with customers/owners/engineers for new or existing product trials or to discuss project specifications. Understand the application and the manufacturing processes. Assist customers/owners/engineers in using products in a way that maximizes end product performance.

Directs the quality control staff engaged in inspection, and testing activities to ensure continuous control over materials, facilities and products.

Plans, promotes and organizes training activities related to product quality and reliability. Investigates customer/owner/engineer’s complaints related to products supplied to a project.

Identify the requirements, hire, train, coach and schedule personnel to meet the needs of labs/testing at asphalt, aggregate or concrete plants.

Requires a strong understanding of field concepts, practices and procedures.

Determines acceptability of re-work by conducting inspections and physical tests of re-worked product.

Document finished product status by recording and summarizing raw material testing, finished-product inspections and physical test data; update regularly the quality assurance database.

Maintains product quality documentation system by writing or rewriting quality assurance procedures. Quickly close out corrective action requests and quickly complete failure analysis work.

Maintains quality assurance standards by following quality assurance policies and procedures, reporting any needed changes to upper management.

Establish formal procedures and processes, formal quality response, product quality scorecards and provide monthly reports on product performance versus the targets.

Assist sales staff in recommending appropriate products based on application and specification knowledge. Submit mix designs and raw material data sheets to specifiers for acceptance.

Manage budgets for failure analysis, third party contractors and/or other required testing

Provide feedback to marketing and sales team related to customer activities: manufacturing processes and conditions, technology roadmap, design win opportunities, QA/QC procedures and tests, yield loss targets and drivers, and other critical requirements.

Lead cross-functional project teams including manufacturing, operations, quality assurance, R&D, sales and marketing. Produce high quality, concise yet brief updates for internal and external use.

Research the quality and design of materials for bidding projects, design and implement better methods, and research new techniques.

Communicates effectively and has the ability to work with potentially difficult people under high stress situations. Must be a self-motivated team player with good interpersonal skills and the ability to maintain positive customer relations. Act in a courteous/respectful manner towards others.

Ensure OSHA, EPA, DNR, safety and environmental regulation compliance. Perform other duties as required.
